The scientists who specialize in forecasting, or predicting, weather are called meteorologists. Meteorologists look at a few basic atmospheric interactions and hope to predict the weather in the next few days. They also use several tools in order to measure and predict weather.
Here is a list of several tools that meteorologists (as well as anyone interested in science) can use in order to observe the weather. Have you ever heard of any of these? Have you ever used any of these?

Barometer
A barometer is used to measure air pressure
Depending on the air pressure, meteorologists can determine the type of weather to expect. When the air pressure gauge goes high on the unit it means that a storm is coming in and rain is expected.
If the gauge shows falling pressure it means sunny weather for the area.

Rain Gauge
A rain gauge is used to measure the amount of accumulated precipitation
The ideal site for a rain gauge is in an open area that is protected from wind or tall buildings. Wind can affect the amount of rain gathered in a rain gauge due to blowing the rain, and tall buildings may obstruct the falling rain.

Anemometer
An anemometer is used to measure wind speed
The most common type of anemometer has three or four cups attached to horizontal arms. The arms are attached to a vertical rod. As the wind blows, the cups rotate, making the rod spin. The stronger the wind blows, the faster the rod spins. The anemometer counts the number of rotations, or turns, which is used to calculate wind speed.
Thermometer
A thermometer is used to measure temperature
If you get sick, that's one type of thermometer. Another type is used to measure the temperature in your oven. Another is used in your car's radiator. Climatologists use their own that measures temperatures in a specific range.
